Even if you no longer have acne, it can leave behind scars that can affect your self confidence. Although makeup can help to hide it, there are ways to diminish the appearance of acne scars by using the right Korean skincare products.

Although there are laser treatments and other mechanical methods to reduce the look of acne scars, it is often expensive and not always recommended for certain skin types. Below are some cheaper skincare methods to heal acne scars.

1. Exfoliate

Using exfoliators removes the top layer of skin slowly. This promotes new skin generation will which in time improves the look of scars by making them lighter and flatter. You can use a chemical exfoliants such as AHA in the form of Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid or Azaleic Acid,  or physical exfoliating with a Konjac Sponge or Clarisonic Brush. The easiest way to incorporate exfoliating into your Korean Skincare routine is to use an AHA Toner after cleansing. It is recommended to exfoliate 2-3 times a week for best results. Over exfoliating can damage your skin barrier leading to sensitive skin that will become prone to dryness, irritation and breakouts. When choosing an exfoliating method, choose one and evaluate the results over 2-3 weeks rather than using many at once.

2. Brightening Ingredients

Ingredients in products that target pigmentation will help to lighten scars. In addition to exfoliating, it's a good idea to use at least one brightening serum. Use serums that include these ingredients in the beginning of the list. Ingredients in serums that work well for scarring, pigmentation, hyperpigmentation and melasma include:

  • Linoleic acid
  • Arbutin
  • Kojic acid
  • B Resorcinol
  • Soy
  • Liquorice Root Extract
  • Rucinol
  • Vit C +E
  • Ferrulic
  • Niacinamide
  • Alpha hydroxy acids
  • Mulberry extract
  • Azalic acid
  • And glycerol for gene tang
  • Glycolic Acid

3. Hydro-colloidal plasters

These plasters help to not only protect an active breakout from bacteria, but also prevents scarring and will heal a breakout faster by absorbing any exudation (discharge such as pus, sebum). Use hydro-colloidal plasters when a breakout comes to a head (when you see a white head) to prevent new scars from forming.  The plaster can be left on overnight and should leave the area less inflamed.

It will take a few months to start seeing results, but sticking with it will definitely improve the appearance of acne scars.
